On November 29, , seven hundred members of the Colorado Territory militia embarked on an attack of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indian villages. The militia was led by U. John Chivington, a Methodist preacher, as well as a freemason. After a night of heavy drinking by the soldiers, Chivington ordered the massacre of the Indians. Over two-thirds of the slaughtered and maimed were women and children. This atrocity has been known as the Sand Creek Massacre ever since. For years, the United States had been engaged in conflict with several Indian tribes over territory. The Treaty of Fort Laramie in had given the Indians extensive territory, but the Pikes Peak gold rush in and other factors had persuaded the U. Although the peace seeking chiefs signed the treaty to ensure the safety of their people, not all of the tribes were happy with the decision.

Although he died fairly young, Hook Nose left an impact on the west during his time. Giving in to the enemy did not seem to be an option for him. If I go into this fight I shall certainly be killed”. Hook Nose possessed an elaborate warbonnet that he believed gave him special powers.
The medicine man Ice, later known as White Bull, made the warbonnet, and assured Hook Nose he would be impervious to the white man’s bullets as long as he followed certain conditions. Hook Nose could not shake hands in the way of the white man, nor could he eat food that had been touched with any iron implement. Ice told Hook Nose that should he violate either of these conditions, he would surely be killed in battle.
During the feast, he ate some fry bread. However, the woman who cooked the bread had used an iron fork to remove it from the cooking pan, which violated one of the conditions of his medicine.

Fun weekend campsite We visited Battle Creek Campground after we discovered that our intended campground Elam Campground was full. We looked at the map and noticed that Battle Creek was not too far away and decided to head here instead of other closer campgrounds. Battle Creek is just outside of Mineral, just to the west. Upon arrival, we noticed that there was a campground host, which is not common with these small no reservation campgrounds.
The host sold firewood, which many people were taking advantage of we brought our own. The campground has both pit and flush toilettes and some even have electricity! Also, pets are allowed, but must be on a leash at all times I found this out the hard way. Also, fires must be out and totally dead at night, otherwise a forest service ticket may be in the mail. Someone with come through the park at night and check fires.
True to it’s name, Battle Creek runs alongside the campground and it a short walk from the sites. We went fishing early Saturday morning and quickly caught two nice looking Rainbow trout that we scrambled into our eggs. I’m pretty sure they are planters, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t taste good! There are plenty of other areas to go fishing, other than near the campground, it just may be a short hike from the car.

The pomp and gaiety concealed, if only for one splendid evening, the failure of his mission. Efforts to quell the rebellion in America were not going well.
Sir William Howe had occupied Philadelphia the previous fall, but another British army, under the command of Maj. John Burgoyne, had been forced to surrender to the rebels at Saratoga, N. France, inveterate enemy of Great Britain, would soon be entering the contest on the side of the rebels. So Sir William was glad to be done with this war.
As the smoke from the last fireworks drifted away, his successor, Lt. Sir Henry Clinton, was left alone with the perplexities of his new command. Orders had arrived from London. Clinton was to leave Philadelphia and withdraw to New York City.

Lengel The Battle of the Brandywine on September 11, , marked the apparent end of a long period of frustration for the British in North America. Since then, however, the only serious engagements between the armies had been the inconclusive affair at White Plains, N. The British commander spent the first part of the summer campaign of in New Jersey, trying to lure Washington into the open for another major engagement that would finally wipe out the main American army while Lieutenant-General John Burgoyne’s northern expedition severed New England from the rest of the colonies.
Washington’s stubborn refusal to risk a major engagement forced the British commander to find another means of forcing battle, and on July 8 he began embarking his 16, men on board his brother Admiral Richard Howe’s armada at Sandy Hook, N. In the process he might force the pitched battle he had sought unsuccessfully in New Jersey.

No more interesting treatise of any family exists than that entitled “The Clan Macneil” by The Macneil of Barra, chief of the clan, published, , by the Caledonian Publishing Company.
It tells how Niall of Scythia was invited into Egypt by Pharoah Cingcris and of the great work he accomplished in regulating the flow of the Nile River, which was named for him.
